i realize there are plenty of people that can’t afford the services that i offer, but some of them could really use them badly. I have no problem participating in things such as the Designoramathon this past weekend, where two dozen of us creatives gave up our saturday to use our skills to do well-needed work for local nonprofits. They all know they can’t count on getting work done for free, and the nonprofits had to apply for their project to get considered, and we worked on the 7 or so projects that were determined to be the greatest need.

As empowering as this post may be to some RIT alumni, it is best to keep in mind that just because you paid top dollar for an education in the arts and learned from some the best in your field, you aren’t the best at what you do. Sure, your favorite professor may still tell his students about that awesome project you did back in 2005. Yeah, you may be a cut above the rest, but you must prove yourself first.

My professors were a pair of world class sculptors, my classmates were acclaimed craftspeople from around the globe, and I recently had an opportunity to study with the preeminent bicycle frame builder. Some would think I am bound for success, but I feel that I just have more opportunities to fail. I’m far from the best, but I continue to produce work, and keep my skills fresh. I don’t work directly in my area of study, but I’m not too far from it either. As a student, I recognized the inherent value of my education, but as an alumni I must demonstrate it.

If you are an RIT student or alumni and feel entitled to a specific salary or pay, think again. The biggest mistake is to think your top dollar education at an esteemed institution will carry you everywhere. Your certificate of completion will only carry you so far; it is your constitution, attitude, and skill will take you to new heights. If someone is offering you $9.00 an hour, it could be because that is all they see in you.

laurie, i feel for you. over the summer months when i was in between semesters at school, i tutored several people in photoshop for $25/hr. This was only after I had to dodge left and right those people who believed charging minimum wage, or just above it, is what we’re worth. It’s also possible the people that need the help from someone like you can’t afford someone like you, so they offer something they can afford. But, keep looking for something you’re worth. In the meantime, take those low paying gigs and use them as testimonials in the future :)

anyway…

It’s kinda like all those union guys standing outside this pizza shop being worked on by my office, handing out flyers to boycott the new joint, informing us that non-union contracters were hired and working way below the standard rates, basically screwing with the integrity of their profession. THAT is what is frustrating. when people are undercutting the standard for the market to save money.

I don’t think that a degree is an entitlement as much as more of a ‘license’ or ‘certification’, like anything… if i got certified to drive an 18wheeler, i’d expect to be paid more in general than an uncertified driver. if i had a cosmetology certification, i doubt i’d give out free haircuts anymore (barter, perhaps but still).

sure, the kids i taught this summer made a website in a week, but would i have them make a site for my professional business? doubtful! one week of web-camp is just the tip of the iceburg, and the money i might save by paying them next to nothing would not be worth the headache and end product.

just sayin’.
